- 1600’s People with mental health challenges were chained to walls. “Lunatics” were treated like sideshow attractions, and many people were persecuted in the Salem witch trials for experiencing different realities.
- 1700’s Superstitious explanations gave way to the medical model explanation. Facilities first started opening that didn’t require chains and shackles. The first psychiatric hospital opened.
